Gallaudet University Class of 1957

Hello Beloved Classmates (1957):

We hope this message will find you well.

The Metropolitan Washington (DC) classmates were at the Maryland Deaf Senior Citizens’ monthly social gathering on February 19, 2009.

We, all of us except Bob Scribner, took an opportunity during the gathering to discuss the class fund which has been inactive ever since our class reunion in the fall of 2007. As reported by our class treasurer, Theodore Hagemeyer, the class treasury is about $700 plus.

We made a suggestion to donate $500 to a worthy Gallaudet cause, and retain the rest of our fund for future use. It was unanimously agreed that we do so.

We are asking you, as a member of the Class of 1957, to support our suggestion of donating $500 from our treasury to Gallaudet.

It was mentioned at the gathering that we have five choices of funds to donate $500:

1. Gallaudet Library
2. Peikoff Alumni House (Ole Jim’s)
3. James Lee Sorenson Language and Communication Center (SLCC) for SLCC Personalized Brick
4. Gallaudet Museum (under planning stage)
5. Leave the money in the treasury untouched

We, the local 57ers, recommend that the money ($500) be used to buy a personalized brick (Class of 1957 or something like this) to be placed outside of the new beautiful SLCC building. That way, we will leave a legacy at Gallaudet for many years to come.

Okay, what is your choice? We need your help. Your suggestion will be counted, and the majority vote from the classmates will determine the wish of the classmates as a whole.

Alexander F. Balogi Jr.  
Balogi, Alexander F., Jr. age 75, of Champlin, passed away peacefully at home Nov. 12, 2008 surrounded by his family. Alex retired from the Star Tribune Newspaper after 30+ years. He was preceded in death by parents, Alex and Eva; sisters, Flo Bloom and Eva Antone; brother, Bill Thompson; and grandson, Michael. Survived by loving wife of 47 years, Ramona; children, Mona (Mark) Sundeen, M.Sgt. Alexander III (Beth), Alvin (Connie), Andy (Sally), Maria (John) Frischmon, Marilyn Balogi, Tony, Melissa Thomsen (Joel Harrington), Michelle Balogi (Don Burton) and Adam (Heather Hiivala); 22 grandchildren; sisters, Elsie Mills and Sarah Sheilds; many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial Saturday 10:30 AM with reviewal one hour prior at St. Gerard Catholic Church, 9600 Regent Ave. North, Brooklyn Park. Pray for the family…

This is very hard for me to share this news to all of you. Herbert and Lynn were with our family in Austin for three weeks. We had a wonderful time together.

Herbert and Lynn left our house this morning at 6:30 am going on the route back to Atlanta. A pick-up truck crashed in front of my parents’ car. My father didn’t make it. He died at 8:05 am at Brackenridge Hospital. It is hard for me to believe he was gone! He was a wonderful father and grandfather to my children. Lynn is at the hospital with broken (right) leg and right wrist and collarbone. She will go through surgery tomorrow…other than that she is OK. She misses Herbert.

Herbert was with Class of 1957 for a short time in our preparatory year. He hailed from Georgia School for the Deaf. On behalf of Class of 1957 and ourselves, we extend our deep condolences to Lynn and her family.

Greetings to the class of 1957

A class that excludes even one of its members is no class at all. My apology if not every classmate reads this but hopefully we will eventually reach out to all by other means of communication.

Gallaudet University Alumni Emeriti Club successfully met last weekend at the Gallaudet homecoming.  Class of ’57:  Lois Burr, Alice and Ted Hagemeyer, Virginia Luke, Jerry Pelarski, Kay Francis and Joe Rose, Bob Scribner, Buddy Singleton and Keith Thompson had their medallion on the chest as they witnessed 36 from Class ’58 being inducted in the club on Friday, October 17.

We were also delighted that our classmate, Albert Pimentel, who was unable to make it last year, is now a member of the club.  He and his wife, Sally, were at the ceremony.

As the saying goes, it is always good to come home to Gallaudet and our memories should never fade even some of us stayed only one year.  For those of you who could not make it to our 50th anniversary reunion last year, we hope you can join the club in 2009.

About the medallion: Its face depicts a replica of the historic Tower Clock, flanked by the words Alumni Emeriti Club, recognizing Gallaudet classes with anniversaries of 50 or more years. The reverse side of the medallion’s face depicts the Gallaudet seal, which was originally created in 1864. Both sides have the 13 stars representing the nation’s original states.

We were there during the Gallaudet Homecoming event recently, and the Class of 1958 was celebrating its 50th year anniversary at that time. It was a proud moment for us, the members of Class of 1957, who were there wearing the medallions we received last year. All of us, the Washington metropolitian classmates, were in attendance, and we had a great time mingling with hundreds of the homecoming attendees.

Hi Alice,  Wish I could join you all at Gallaudet  for the special weekend.  I will be there in spirit though. I finally got a new computer, gift from some very good friends who have adapted me as their “grandmother” and now I finally got a chance to sit down and enjoy all the pictures from our 50th reunion.  They are all great and will look at them often to remember the wonderful time we had.

I went to Alaska in July, flew up, three nights in the Denali Park area then 7 nights on a cruise ship back to Vancouver, WA.  A trip of a lifetime.

My best regards to all classmates who will be together at Gallaudet.

Beloved Classmates

As Gallaudet University hosts Homecoming and Reunion Weekend, the class of 1957 will remain its visibility on the Kendall Green this week and always - our great class!

Have you yet counted names and some pictures of our classmates that appear in the latest GALLAUDET TODAY magazine (FALL 2008)  I hope your math skills are still good. No doubt, all of you will be on the Kendall Green in spirits; some will make it in person like Kay Francis and Joe Rose, our co-webmasters, Lois Burr, Virginia Luke, Jerry Pelarski, Bob Scribner, Ted and Alice Hagemeyer and from far away — Buddy Singleton, Keith Thompson, and John Jacobs.

I plan to visit Deaf Collection which is now on the first floor under the new name: ATLAS (Academic Technology, Library and Archives Services) http://atlas.gallaudet.edu.

With thanks to our long friend, Bob Davila and Provost Stephen Werner and also Alumni Office for what our alma mater is today.  Many happy faces – students, faculty, staff and alumni.

DVDs

The DVDs of the Class of 1957 reunion activities which were held at Gallaudet last October 2007 were already sent to the following classmates who requested them. They are: Lois Burr, Gloria Chappell, Allie Joiner, Alice Obray, Helen Pendergraft, Miriam Thumann and Ruth Ann Wilding. We also sent DVDs to: Ed Barber, Charles Chappell, John Jacobs, Edwin Parks, Laurence Plate, Keith Thompson and George Wilding. There are 480+ pictures in each DVD, and we hope the viewers will have a great evening viewing the video show.
